COULD CATARACT SURGERY
ENHANCE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE?
We asked Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Miss Alison Rowlands BSc, MB BS, FR-
COphth from Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral, for her expert advice:
Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures
in the UK and, in recent years, the number of people undergoing
this corrective treatment has risen steeply – partly as a result of the
ageing population. These days, thanks to surgical advancements, the procedure is swift
and straightforward, and the recovery period is conveniently short.
Times vary from patient to patient, but you can expect to recover
within 10 to 14 days.
Whatever the cause of cataracts, whether they're the consequence of
ageing, a medical condition such as diabetes or the after-effect of an
injury, they can have a significant impact on quality of life and getting
them treated sooner rather than later is advisable. Unlike the NHS, Spire Murrayfield can offer a range of intraocular
lenses to patients who choose to come to us for their cataract
procedures. This means that, in many cases, we can not only correct
eye-sight deterioration caused by cataracts but can enable patients to
live 'glasses-free' too.
A cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye. This prevents light
getting to the back of the eye causing vision to become blurry and
cloudy and making eyes more sensitive to light and glare. Usually,
cataracts will get worse over time.
At Spire Murrayfield Wirral Hospital, we use trusted and clinically
proven techniques to improve the impaired eyesight cataracts
cause, calling upon leading ophthalmic expertise and cutting-edge
diagnostic equipment.
Quality of life is what we're seeking to help our patients to maintain,
when it comes to cataract treatment. Many of the people we treat
have concerns about the impact cataracts are having on their ability
to enjoy their leisure time – the issue can interfere with their ability
to play golf for instance or to participate in other sporting activities.
Cataracts can also threaten independence, when they start to impede
a person's driving proficiency or make it more difficult to see at
night. Having them removed can make a huge difference and, at
Spire Murrayfield Hospital, our team of expert Ophthalmologists is
focused on getting patients back to normal quickly.
During cataract surgery, your consultant will remove the cloudy lens
in your eye and insert a clear artificial lens. The surgeon makes a
small incision to the front of your eye and removes the damaged lens.
This is usually done by ultrasound to break up your lens into small
fragments to remove it easily The artificial lens is then inserted.

During consultation our experts will help you select the lens option
that best suits your needs. Our range includes monofocal lenses
that correct either short or long sight, with a choice of three focal
points; toric lenses that help to correct astigmatism (a problem with
focusing) and multifocal lenses that correct both near and distance
vision, like varifocal glasses.
As an Ophthalmologist with many years of experience, it has been
a pleasure for me to see the benefits that cataract surgery can offer
patients. Having healthy eyesight can help you to live a full and
rewarding life, no matter what age you are. The important thing is to
address the problem as early as possible, so that cataracts don't hold
you back.
