REVIEW OF ELIZABETH MACNEAL 'THE DOLL FACTORY' BY SUE PORTER
This is a debut book but with a huge, massive potential! Historical, fast
paced crime fiction. Set in Victorian England. The two main characters are
Silas and Iris. Silas is a creepy individual who likes to collect strange curious
objects, animals which have died so he can stuff them and sell them onto
local artists. Iris is a twin and works with her sister in a doll factory. Iris
dreams of leaving her sister and her dreary employment. She has dreams
and aspirations. At night when the house is asleep she likes to paint a form
of escapism from the drug addled owner.
Iris’s sister does not like her, for many reasons one of them being she
contracted small pox and blames Iris for not contracting the deadly disease
herself. Furthermore she believes, Iris was behind her suitor breaking off
his friendship with her. She is now pock marked and blind in one eye, whilst
Iris is a beauty to behold with a misshapen collar bone. Iris is desperate
to leave, fate plays her hand. A chance meeting with Louis an artist who
wants to employ her as his model. A paid position with new lodgings, yet
society will frown upon this an artist’s model is seen as only one step above
a becoming a prostitute.
What is she to do? Sinister Silas also meets Iris and becomes obsessed
with her. The tale unfolds as you watch these characters race to towards
an ending quite like no other!
Elizabeth will be talking about her book 20th May at Linghams, Heswall.
