THE“ D” IN DENTISTRY NOW STANDS FOR DIGITAL

In the last 50 years the world has changed enormously and so too with dentistry. The pace of change is exciting and who knows what is in our future?
You will have noticed these changes every time you visit your dentist: the SMS text to alert you that your appointment is due, checking your medical records and signing in on an iPad maybe or being able to make your next appointment via the website but there is much more.
Digital radiography and imaging has meant quality images are instantly available. You may have seen your radiographs on a big screen rather than seeing your dentist squinting at tiny photographic films moaning about the developed image. With digital imaging, 3D images are possible making planning your implant or surgery precise and predictable.
Dental photography is now the norm with the ability to send images to specialists, dental technicians or hospitals. Shade matching can be achieved by a gadget and even decay diagnosed.
In our practice the digital scanner builds up 3D images of the mouth and within minutes we have shown our patients the possible‘ straight smile’ and can even initiate the manufacturing process instantly by the tap on our computer screen( something that took weeks just a few years ago).
So what lies in the future? Well who knows but I do know that the digital world is here to stay so maybe your kids should spend a little time playing computer games after all …
