HIGHLIGHTS OF GLASTONBURY
I have always greatly admired fellow musicians and creatives and I am thrilled to be able to tell you about those I know well and those I have recently discovered . Please take a look at my Instagram profile for more of the artists I am in awe of .
It has always struck me as odd when people argue about music , it is a little like arguing over religion or politics . Pointless .
Everyone is , however , entitled to their own opinion . I heard and read so many of those opinions on the performances at Glastonbury last weekend , so I thought I would offer mine to the mix for what it ’ s worth .
I didn ’ t watch it in order and didn ’ t catch many acts , but here goes ... Ed Sheeran
The first session I caught was Ed Sheeran . I have never been a huge fan , but this guy is growing on me by the minute . I love that he isn ’ t good-looking - well not in the ‘ pop ’ world sense , but boy can the boy write ? Hit after hit was performed with the help of his loop pedal and the adoring crowd and I love how patient the crowd is while he builds the tracks . He is energetic and strangely charismatic , yep , I did say that .
Texas
Next up was a favourite of mine , Texas . Actually , this year , more than any other has featured a good few personal favourites . I have seen Texas in concert a couple of times , and they never disappoint . They opened with Summer Son , a real feel-good track and went on to deliver a sterling set . Charlene ’ s voice has never let her down and that was true of this performance . She looked so cool on that stage , in her fifties having the time of her life .
Guns ‘ N ’ Roses
ED SHEERAN
Here we go with the start of the controversy . Guns ’ N ’ Roses . I don ’ t confess to being a diehard fan , I leave that to my son , Zak , but I have really liked some of their songs over the years . However , Axel ’ s voice is shot , something I think we all agree with .
Some believe they deserved their spot at Glastonbury , just because of their contribution to music over the years . I ’ m not so sure . For me it ’ s a case of when you can ’ t hit the notes , it ’ s time to call it a day . It was nothing short of painful seeing the band trying to recreate their former glory and failing . The sound mix was dreadful drowning out Axle ’ s voice ( maybe a blessing considering ), but Axle did manage to engage with the crowd , who looked like they were having a ball . Small consolation though .
Foo Fighters
I must be the only person on the planet - more controversy - who doesn ’ t like the Foo Fighters . Not my bag at all . I know most of my muso friends love them , my sister and daughter included , but not me . I appreciate that Dave Grohl is a great musician , and I liked Nirvana , but Foo Fighters is all too frantic and loud . Oh , I guess I sound old now , lol . That will be because I am !
Rick Astley
PRETENDERS
Talking of drummers , did you catch Rick Astley doing Highway to Hell ? What a blast ! I didn ’ t know he could drum . Again , not a favourite of mine but the guy can undoubtedly sing . The eighties cheese idol entertained the crowd , which , after all , is what they are there to do .
