GORILLAS : OUR WORLD
Teach Rex is an educational business run by two Primary School teachers , which uses powerful hooks to ignite the imagination of children in an educational setting . Joe Parsonage and Sam Bryan , the founders of Teach Rex , use dragons and dinosaurs within science and literacy workshops to promote a love of creative writing as well as other subjects across the curriculum .
Teach Rex has delivered educational workshops over the past two years to more than 250 schools , and have found that creating an emotional attachment through a prop and story-telling is an incredibly effective way of inspiring and motivating children to engage in their learning . Teach Rex has invested heavily in Thomas the Gorilla , which is a lifelike gorilla costume , that will support the team on their journey to promote sustainable behaviours and awareness amongst children .
Sam stated that “ Every year around the world an area of forest the size of the UK ( 26 million hectacres ), the vast majority tropical rainforest , is being lost . This is having a terrible impact on wildlife . He explained that “ Nearly 20 % of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed over the past 50 years and if trends continue , it may cease to exist in another 50 years time . However , human behaviours can change and now more than ever , there are governments and people putting laws in place to help change the current situation ”.
Joe explained that “ As teachers , it is our obligation to educate people from a young age regarding the importance of sustainable behaviours . We can do this by linking everything we do to subjects within the curriculum , such as Science , English and ICT ”. It cannot be disputed , the natural world is phenomenal and deserves to be looked after . If humans are to enjoy the splendor of the world then the future of tomorrow , the young people we teach , must have an awareness of the positive and negative impacts of humans on the planet . One thing that must be realized is that the planet will continue to survive but animals on it may not .
Teach Rex also sends schools a ‘ Teachers Idea Pack ’ that are differentiated from KS1 up to UKS2 , that have been created by teachers across the UK . This links a variety of books to purposeful , cross curricular learning opportunities that continue childrens ’ learning once the team leaves with their gorilla . Following on from this , through partnering with businesses such as Teachers Pet , Teach Rex are able to provide schools with resources that can further assist teachers in the classroom .
Sam from Teach Rex said “ This is a project that we have been working on since properly setting the business up in 2017 , and we are delighted that we can provide schools with such a holistic package that has positive learning outcomes for a whole school , or whoever schools decide to target ”.
