MEET THE MOBILE VET
Richard Sanderson BVSc certAVP( SAP) GDL MRCVS, Owner of Sanderson Vet and Honorary Lecturer at University of Liverpool talks all things veterinary.
Veterinary Medicine is rapidly changing with a growing number of practices falling into corporate ownership. This is often not known to the clients, with them retaining their original name. The market is becoming tougher, even for certificate holders like myself in an independent practice like ours and we offer a full range of routine and specialist procedures from vaccines and the poorly pet right through to chemotherapy, thoracic surgery and orthopaedics. We are in the minority of practices that is still available 24 / 7 rather than outsourcing their out-of-hours care, and who remain willing to see those less common species such as Koi Carp.
Stress in animals and owners is a key issue. The total experience of going to the vet for your pet can be over an hour once accounting for the travel time, waiting time and the battle to get the dog in the car or the cat into the cat box! A standard vet appointment can be as short as 5 minutes but we aim to spend at least 20-30mins with each client. By providing this in-the-home we have more time to get the history from the client, whilst reducing the stressful examination part to just a few minutes. Most of the time, the pet barely notices we have been there! For those pets who dislike the vet, we find they are much better in their own home.
There is more information available on the internet, with the biggest challenge to try and find the best
advice on key area’ s such as vaccination, nutrition and parasite treatment. Like our approach for our own health, there is a drive towards natural living and holistic supplements. We focus our business model about creating a close working relationship with clients and their pets so we can understand and recognise their individual needs and risks. By offering specialist procedures too, we don’ t need to refer cases meaning you get your local vet all the time, which provides wonderful peace-of-mind and excellent standards.
We are running a series of evenings addressing these key topics to enable people to get the best information, and how to find that information. As veterinary practice becomes more competitive we see greater focus on standard Health Care Plans which are often not as beneficial to the client as they may seem. Unlike many practices we don’ t have a one size fits all approach, and look to offer patient specific plans and preventative health care. We stock a wide range of products to suit the individual, and focus on providing patient-focused healthcare, treating your pet like they are our own, supported by state-of-the-art facilities in Heswall.
