your destinations. Countries and communities all over
the world, including the US, have barriers that can
be broken down with the will to overcome, and have
independence that ultimately empowers under-served
women everywhere. Every year CycloFemme uplifts and
celebrates women with a community ride on Mother’s
Day. Choose to dedicate your personal ride on Sunday,
May 13th, or join a community ride. Community rides
are open to anyone, of any gender or age that has a desire
to ride and celebrate the community pillar where women
are empowered.
To further the cause and make a difference in communities
everywhere, CycloFemme is partnering for the second
year in a row with World Bicycle Relief whose goal is
to raise funds to provide bicycles for girl students in
Zambia. With great success last year in raising $30,000,
the partnership hopes to top the 214 bicycles that were
donated to the girl students last year in Kenya. By giving
girls a sense of ownership of a self-propelled mode of
transportation, the idea can stimulate self-reliance and a
sense of independence that will inevitably carry over into
their future for many years to come. Please visit www.
worldbicyclerelief.org to donate; any and all donations are
welcome, as it costs $147 to provide a bicycle for students
in need. While it isn’t necessary to join a group ride to
celebrate women this month, encouraging fundraising
to support the movement to empower girls and women
with a bicycle is the idea behind this year’s theme, “RIDE
together, RISE together.”
No matter if women are in Zambia who are in need of
bridging the distance between home and school or work,
or right here in the US, who can’t afford a vehicle, the
bicycle provides that self-reliance that continues to grow
within, and open doors previously closed. CycloFemme’s
official statement of the year: “all around the world, we
see women advancing and girls growing up with less
boundaries. But there is still so much progress to be made,
still mountains to climb. CycloFemme believes that strong
communities are built around strong communities. By
lifting women, everyone’s life improves.”
And here in the WG, you can join women around the
globe as they band together on bikes to set a movement
in motion. WheelWorks will be hosting two rides both
starting at 8:30am: Ride 1 will be 45 miles on road bikes
with an average speed of 16-18 mph. Ride 2 will be 20-30
miles on road/hybrid bikes along the West Orange Trail,
with an average speed of 13/15 mph. After both rides,
celebrate the day with mimosas and hibiscus drinks
and snacks. Both rides will depart from WheelWorks,
located at 101 West Plant Street in downtown Winter
Garden. View the Facebook event at: www.facebook.com/
