MIC NIGHT
The Attic Door
Brett Dault
Monday evenings in the WG are typically rather sleepy . But back in September , something new hit the town . It happens just twice a month , but has been gaining quite a bit of attention all throughout Central Florida .
The Attic Door ( 28 W . Plant St .), known for its alluring ambiance , cozy couches , wonderful wines and a propensity to showcase some of the area ’ s greatest local talent , has begun hosting a new style of open mic night . One with no cover songs and no tracks . It ' s a night where songwriters are invited to come share their original pieces of music with others .

Most musicians rarely have the chance to see their peers perform , as they themselves are often playing gigs on usual show nights . Now , every other Monday at The Attic Door , talented musicians from all around Central Florida come to play their personally-penned pieces of music and poetry – and to a packed house , right here in the WG .
Lori Gibson , proprietor of The Attic Door , had the notion of starting a night like this after a trip to The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville , Tennessee . The Bluebird is an exclusive venue where everyone from Taylor Swift to Garth Brooks has played and is home to the original originals open mic . The venue is also featured on the hit show Nashville , which begins a new season in January on CMT .

Lori became enamored with The Bluebird and wanted to replicate that here at home ; even considering opening a listening room dedicated to just that . However , it wasn ’ t until local musician Mike Lutz approached Lori with the idea of a night dedicated to local songwriters that the idea gained momentum and everything fell into place .
Mike said , “ it would be great to see a songwriter community get established here in Central Florida with The Attic
