MARS GLASS COMPANY
After high school, Amir went to college in Malaysia, earning a bachelor’ s degree in architecture. He then moved to the Bay Area to pursue a master’ s in architecture and building design.
“ I started looking for a job in architecture, but when you have just moved to a totally different country and culture, and English is not your first language, it’ s sometimes harder to be accepted and get hired for jobs that you are qualified for because of the language barrier.”
Meanwhile, an acquaintance who owned a glazing company offered Amir an internship while he kept searching for something in architecture, so he decided to give glazing a try.
“ I had no prior glazing experience, but I went to work at his glass shop and really enjoyed it,” he notes.“ I worked there for three years, doing project management, estimating and going to job sites to help troubleshoot. With my architectural background, I was also able to assist with project design and advising clients on the right materials to use, since I understand the challenges of going from design to actual construction.”
Eventually, several larger companies, including a top Bay Area company, offered Amir a job as a project manager.“ I was very upfront with my boss and asked him what I should do and if he could match what they were offering me. He asked which companies had approached me and advised me that I could get more experience and earn more. His small company really needed me because I was doing so much for them, but he didn’ t try to discourage me from going to the larger company, so I really respected him for that.”
However, shortly after starting his new job, the pandemic hit, which Amir says,“ gave me the opportunity to review what I really wanted to do professionally.”
When the owner of the small glazing company he’ d previously worked for invited him to return, Amir initially agreed to come back as a partner, but after about a year, he realized that he needed to strike out on his own instead, which he did in 2022.“ I had learned early on how to be responsible and inherited a strong entrepreneurial spirit from my father and family,” he explains,“ so I always wanted to start my own business.”
