ISSUE # 1 How Parents Affect Children? - Jayashri Shetty Parents’ relationship with their children should be one of mutual understanding and love, ensuring that children do not cross that fine line of respect for their parents. For this parents must lead exemplary lives themselves. Honesty, integrity and good character can never be taught to children. It should be imbibed. This can be done only if parents possess these traits themselves. Bickering and fighting amongst parents in the presence of their children must be avoided at all costs. This causes mental anxiety in the children. Parents must rather resolve their differences through compromise or through proper dialogue and set an example for their children. Parents must also spend quality time with their children. They must encourage their children to open up and speak to them on all issues- good and bad. Opinions must be shared and not thrust down on them. Children mostly learn from mistakes rather than from advice. Times are changing and pressures of different kinds are mounting on today’s younger generation. Parents must understand and move with the times. Parents must be aware of the company their children keep. While most children do not discuss their friends with parents, the latter can always keep an eye on their children’s social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook and form opinions based on the language used there or the subjects being discussed. Children in such cases must not be confronted but advised on the need to keep proper company. The Strength Lies Within You Razia Garikipati What are you? Are you a doctor, an engineer, a carpenter, an entrepreneur or a salesman? Are you what you are or are you what someone else wanted you to be? Were you forced by a family member into accepting their choices for you? The strength lies within you. To live you, to talk you, to walk you and to BE YOU! you were suppressed beyond degree. You wanted to run; you were made to walk slow. You wanted to walk slow; you were asked to race with horses. WHERE ARE YOU? Your identity was lost, you remained lost in the crowd. The result – you were not allowed to be YOU. You became someone else. Destiny is mocked by being what you are not. You wanted to be a wild lion; you were made a quiet cat. You wanted to voice out your thoughts aloud; Be You! Live life so that when you look back, all you can see are beautiful memories. 3
