MSE Employee Creates new film festival For Utah
When the Sundance Film Festival announced it would move its annual event to Colorado, Trevor Allen saw an opportunity to strengthen Utah’ s local film community, by creating one of his own.
Trevor, a web designer at Miller Sports + Entertainment, remembers the first time a movie was something more than a way to be entertained. When he was in high school, he watched“ 12 Angry Men,” released in 1957, on a whim.
“ That movie changed my life,” Trevor said.“ I was captivated, and it was like this meditative experience where I entered a different world and was engrossed in this story that changed my perspective on life and movies as an art form.”
His love for all things cinema only grew. Trevor and his friends spent evenings and weekends working on short films throughout high school and college. If he wasn’ t behind the camera, he was watching movies in the theater.
“ Watching a movie is uniquely communal,” Trevor said.“ You’ re sitting there with hundreds of strangers, and you’ re all crying or laughing together. Then, when you’ re watching the credits, you see thousands of names, and you realize that was a community united in their mission to tell a story.”
Although Trevor had a strong community around him that also appreciated film, he noticed that there were few spaces that supported local directors in Utah.
The inaugural festival, which was held at the newly renovated Megaplex Geneva location in September, received hundreds of submissions. Trevor and a group of judges from across Utah selected 10 to be shown on the big screen to an audience of over 600. Trevor also partnered with a local Utah restaurant to provide dinner to the night’ s featured filmmakers, and Swig served a complimentary drink to each guest in attendance.
“ Everyone at Miller Sports + Entertainment was supportive from day one,” Trevor said.“ It was incredibly generous of the team to support me and my passion project.”
The 2026 Orem Film Festival will return to Megaplex this fall, fulfilling Trevor’ s goal of creating an annual community event for filmmakers and fans in their own backyard.
Luncheon celebrates new Company Employees
Every quarter, the Larry H. Miller Company invites newly hired and promoted employees to a lunch where they can connect with colleagues from across the LHM platforms and businesses. The most recent lunch in November featured employees from Real Salt Lake and the Utah Royals FC officially joining the LHM family.
Steve Starks, CEO of the LHM Company, kicked off the meal with Amanda Covington, chief corporate affairs officer, who spoke to attendees about her wide-ranging career. Amanda discussed her early days in TV news, her roles in higher education, aerospace and defense, and how she joined the Larry H. Miller Company. She shared how mentors encouraged her to take risks and how working in male-dominated industries taught her to combine confidence with authenticity.
Gail Miller, co-founder of the Larry H. Miller Company, ended the event by sharing how a leap of faith, a small Toyota dealership and a belief in building something lasting grew into today’ s thriving organization. She spoke about the company’ s mission to enrich lives and her excitement for the role each person will play in the next chapter of the Larry H. Miller Company story.
