MILLER FAMILY MESSAGE
ENRICHING LIVES THROUGH SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES
philanthropy Day at the Larry H . Miller Company ’ s 2023 Summit brought over 150 attendees from Utah ’ s philanthropic community to spend the day learning from each other and covering key topics , including next-generation engagement , impact investing , and the role of donors in measuring impact . The underlying theme through these topics was a need to work collectively together and tackle root causes or systemic challenges in our community .
Jean Oelwang , CEO of Virgin Unite , delivered a keynote address on the need for meaningful relationships and deep connections to make great things happen . Oelwang has spent the last 19 years helping organizations to come together to collectively solve social problems , in addition to leading the philanthropic efforts of the Richard Branson family . During her presentation , she asked attendees to close their eyes and ponder the question , “ Who has loved you into being ?”
Philanthropic leaders , including Todd Pedersen , Christine Ivory , Alex Eaton , and Greg Miller , spoke on a panel moderated by Nick Tedesco , CEO of the National Center for Family Philanthropy . They discussed their philanthropic journeys and the power of doing good together . Greg Miller shared insights about engaging the next generation in philanthropy and talked about the Miller Legacy Project , an initiative of the Larry H . & Gail Miller Family Foundation . This initiative creates an opportunity for
Miller Family members , starting at age 12 , to nominate organizations to receive funds on behalf of the Miller Family Foundation .
The panel emphasized the importance of building relationships , working collaboratively , and having purpose , passion , and urgency in philanthropy . Together , we can tackle root causes and systemic challenges in our communities through these efforts .
Each of the speakers at Philanthropy Day reminded attendees that when we come together to work on an issue collectively , the rate of change increases , and complex problems can be solved . We cannot do that however , without collective listening , learning , proximity , and love .
