The Salt Lake Bees announced a new coaching staff in February 2023 . Keith Johnson will return as the manager of the club alongside hitting coach Joel Chimelis , pitching coach Derrin Ebert , coach Jack Santora , trainer Jonathan Fierro , strength and conditioning coach Henry Aleck , game planning strategist Andrew Hansford and video assistant Brooklyn Tanner .
Johnson previously managed the Bees from 2011-2014 and again from 2016-2018 before moving to the Miami organization where he spent the last two seasons as the first base coach for the Marlins on Don Mattingly ’ s coaching staff . Johnson was the 2013 Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year and also spent two seasons as a player for Salt Lake , suiting up for the
Stingers in 2002 and 2003 . In his seven seasons as Bees manager Johnson has led Salt Lake to 468 wins , trailing only Buzz manager Phil Roof by three wins in the franchise record books .
Chimelis has been a coach since 2004 after a 15-year playing career that included stops in Mexico , China and Korea . Ebert began his coaching career in 2012 after an 11-year professional career and also dabbled in acting , appearing in the movie Moneyball as former Oakland pitcher Mike Magnante . Santora has been with the Angels organization since 2017 , including a stop as the manager of the Orem Owlz in 2019 and was a coach on the Italian team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic .
Johnson and the Bees get the 2023 campaign started on Friday , March 31 at 1 p . m . The Bees will play 150 games during the 2023 season with 75 of those coming at the friendly confines of Smith ’ s Ballpark .
