Memories from Our Archives (Reprinted from December 2002) Holiday Greetings We went back to the Winning Spirit archives and found a message Larry H. Miller wrote 15 years ago. His sentiments and message still ring true for the company today. A s the end of the year approaches, I find myself reflecting on many things, both of personal and business natures. One of the key elements of my reflections is an ever-increasing feeling of gratitude. The things I am especially grateful for are my family, good health, peace, prosperity, and being able to live in this time and in America. One of my greatest blessings in my life is being associated with so many capable and kind people in my work. I am grateful for all of you who work so hard and give so much to make our organization what it is today. One of the major objectives in my life, and in our businesses, is to make each of the communities in which we conduct business a better community because we are there. I believe we accomplish that objective. I see many times when members of our organization use their time and resources to assist others who need a helping Each of the hand. I see others communities donating hundreds in which of hours to projects we conduct and organizations in need. I see our business people consistently should be rally around those better because among us who we are there. are going through various kinds of Larry H. Miller personal struggles. When I observe these things, I feel very much like a proud father. A great personal challenge I have is to always try to keep in perspective the fact that our businesses are there to serve people— employees and customers—not the people being there to serve the business. I finally have been able to back away a little more and have become able to enjoy more of the moments of seemingly small but important personal interactions and expectations. I am grateful for the opportunities that all of you give me to be able to do the things that I do on a daily basis. Accordingly, I recommit to you that I will do everything that I know how to continue to provide opportunities for all of us to raise and support our families; to LHM Group Value #3: Service. ON, VISION, & GUIDING NCIPLES The Larry H. Miller Group of Companies With nearly 11,000 employees working in retail, automotive, sports, advertising, financing, movies, and more, there’s a lot going on all the time. While growth and financial success are a priority, we also want to make the world a better place. It’s an idea woven into the very fabric of the company. When we serve others, we build bridges where they didn’t exist before. It empowers us to see each transaction as a chance to give true service and enrich lives. It’s through service and giving of ourselves that we find ways to make the ordinary extraordinary. pursue personal and career advancement; to educate our children; and hopefully to enjoy life along the way. I know that at times all these things combined are a tall order, but it’s an equation that’s worked pretty well for us for over 23 years, so I see no reason to stop now. I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a happy and peaceful holiday season. May each of you have a healthy and prosperous 2003. May our lives be good, our futures bright, and may America stand righteously, safe, and tall. That is my wish for all of us as we enter the new year. ◆ Discussion ideas for managers, leaders, and teams: 1. In what way can you serve your coworkers to make a difference in their lives? 2.
