TAKE THE BARK OUT
OF HOLIDAY STRESS
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH CARE HEALTH TIP
The holidays can be a time for celebration – and stress. A
flurry of activities, worries about finances, looking back on
the past year, and an abundance of food and drink can
all combine to cause headaches, tension, fatigue, and an
overall feeling of depression. There are simple ways to
keep the holiday blues at bay though.
• Get Enough Sleep You may have an event every night
of the week, which can leave you feeling drained and
unable to deal with even the smallest problem. Making
sure you get the sleep you need will help you cope.
• Don’t Be Afraid to Say “No” If you are feeling overtaxed,
or like meeting others expectations is leading to you
not taking care of yourself, take a step back. Don’t take
on events that will crowd your time. Don’t overextend
yourself.
• Set a Budget and Stick to It Remember that the
holidays are about spending time with friends and
family – not spending money on them. Even the most
impressive present isn’t worth the worries about debt.
• Limit Alcohol Intake Alcohol heightens all emotional
responses. Also, overindulgence can lead to feeling lousy
and gaining weight.
• Avoid Family Friction Don’t be afraid to excuse yourself
from conversations or activities that are causing stress.
Use a neutral response to cut off any potential conflicts
like “Let’s talk about this another time.”
• Don’t Expect Perfection Not even Martha Stewart is
Martha Stewart. Worrying about making every detail
perfect will subtract from your enjoyment of the season.
The holiday blues can be quite common, but if you are
feeling especially down—for example, your sleep or your
appetite is affected—contact your health care provider
or visit Mental Health America for help and guidance. If
you are thinking about suicide, call 911 or your health care
provider right away.
