WINNING SPIRIT WINNING SPIRIT May/June 2018 May/June 2018 WINNING SPIRIT WINNING SPIRIT May/June 2018 May/June 2018 LHM Day of Service: Utah Edition Going About Doing Good The annual LHM Day of Service is one that employees throughout the company look forward to each year—not only as a chance to help others but also as a way of sharing our company culture with the world. In Utah, employees experienced a wide range of activities, from eradicating noxious weeds in the foothills to repairing fences. In all, the experience was extremely positive for everyone involved, and some of your co-workers—and some of the people we’ve helped— have shared their feelings below. ◆ “The highlight was the kids (Westridge Academy students) singing as they worked and traveled the campus. I enjoyed having Megaplex and Super Ford together as an opportunity to learn more about others.” Corina Nelson, Megaplex “I just wanted to reach out to you to thank you and your team so very much for helping us spread mulch on the playground at Riverside Park last week. We are a small crew here at SLC Open Space, so we rely heavily on volunteers to help us get big projects done, and you all really delivered!” Natalie Kane, Events and Activities Assistant Salt Lake City Division of Parks and Public Lands PFS, Boys and Girls Club “Ron, our contact with Murray City Park, was very grateful for all of the work that we did. As we were leaving, he expressed to the group that the work that we accomplished would have taken them close to a month to complete. With our help, people will be able to enjoy the park, and they will be able to have community gatherings there.” 4 Dealership Awards 6 LHM Day of Service 2018 12 Society of Excellence 4 Dealership Awards 6 LHM Day of Service 2018 12 Society of Excellence “Our employees said that they really enjoyed working at the park, especially with the weather being so nice that day. There were plenty of projects for everyone to stay busy and productive. It was nice to be able to see a project from start to finish. (We built and painted a white picket fence.) The event director, Steve Hirschi, said “I’m very impressed with how much work your company accomplished. Not only did you guys do a lot, but the quality of work was amazing.” Multiple times he commented on the quality of work. He also really liked that we were all dressed in the same T-shirt. ” Shaylee Thacker, Prestige Financial Jessica Johnson, MUR “I feel the project this year was very positive. We all worked close to each other, so we had a lot of interaction. We had a light breakfast at the beginning. The staff at Riverdale city did a nice job of introducing what we were going to do and thanking us. Our staff loves participating in the Larry H. Miller day of service.” Troy Bullard, RCD S P E C I A L E D I T I O N UTAH 4 Dealership Awards 6 LHM Day of Service 2018 12 Society of Excellence S P E C I A L E D I T I O N COLORADO/NEW MEXICO We created four different issues of Winning Spirit Magazine to showcase the Day of Service activities in each of the different regions. Miller Group of Companies LHM Group’s Guiding Principle #5: Go About Doing Good Until There’s Too Much Good in the World. Larry Miller understood the importance of giving back to the community, and he made it an integral part of his life. Gail Miller said, “Participating in our annual Day of Service is a wonderful way for our organization to carry on Larry’s legacy of helping others.” In addition to organized projects and participating in charitable causes, doing good in the world can be as simple as sharing a smile, holding the door open for someone, or performing a simple act of service. While small or insignificant to us, our gift of time, service, or kindness can make all the difference to someone in need. Discussion ideas for managers, leaders, and teams: 1. Whether you participated in an organized event and/or provided service on your own, what was your favorite part of the Day of Service? What was the most challenging or difficult part? 2. What causes or charities are close to your heart? These can range from local organizations to national groups. Make a list of the ways you can get involved. Are there ideas or projects your team/department could do to serve together this year?
