Message from Gail Miller, Owner of the LHM Group of Companies
We All Lose When We Disrespect Others
Those who live in Utah may have heard about,
or seen on the news, a story about an incident
that happened in our arena during the regular
Jazz season between one of our ticket holders
and a player on the visiting team. This incident
did not reflect our values or our expectations
for conduct at our properties. This happened
in Salt Lake City, but it is worthy of sharing
in our other locations because it is an issue
that affects all of us as we interact with each
other, our customers, and the public at large.
The Miller Family acknowledges the right of
everyone to expect courtesy, respect, common
decency and civility at all times and in all places.
We are all responsible for the well-being of the
society in which we live, and we can each make
a difference by making sure we are creating the
best place in town to work and the best place in
town to do business. And, I would add to that,
by adhering to these principles we will create the
best place to live.
The following is the message delivered to our
fans at Vivint Smart Home Arena before the
Jazz game on Thursday, March 14, 2019.
A
s the owner of the Utah Jazz, I feel it’s
important for me to take this opportunity
to express some thoughts and feelings
about the unfortunate event at the game
Monday night. I am extremely disappointed
that one of our “fans” and I use that term
loosely, conducted himself in such a way as to
offend not only a guest in our arena but also
me personally, our players, my family, our
organization, the community and you, who I
believe are the best fans in the NBA.

This should never happen. We are not a
racist community. We believe in treating
people with courtesy and respect as human
beings. There have, from time to time been
individual fans who have exhibited poor
behavior and times when we have forgotten
our manners and disrespected players on
other teams by booing them. I always cringe
when that happens. I want to get up and shout
STOP! I would much prefer and recommend
that you use your enthusiasm to cheer for
our players and show your support by being
supportive of their hard work.
We have a code of conduct in this arena. It
will be strictly enforced.
Everyone who comes here, visiting teams
included, deserves the right and should
expect to be treated with dignity at all times.
When bad incidents, like Monday night’s
event, happen, it not only affects the player
it’s directed at, it also affects our players.
Other teams are not our enemies, they are
competitors. Competition is a good thing. It
allows players to showcase their talents. It
allows us as fans to encourage, appreciate,
cheer for and enjoy those who share their
talents with us and the world.
The Miller Family has been stewards of
this team for 34 years. We love sharing it with
all of Utah and the world. We love the fact
that you support us. But it is also important
that you support our players as citizens of our
community and that you treat them and their
families with respect at ALL times whether it
is on the court or off the court such as in our
schools, at the grocery store or anywhere else
you may have an opportunity to rub shoulders
with them. They have chosen to become part of
our community and we welcome them because
they make us richer with their diversity.
Again, I would admonish all of you, and
your friends who may use your tickets at
any time, to use your energy for supporting
and cheering OUR players with your honest,
sincere enthusiasm rather than booing,
degrading, or demeaning players on the
opposing team. No one wins when respect
goes away. We are all human beings, deserving
of being treated with courtesy and respect.
Please remember, we ALL win when we work
together to create a safe, inclusive place to
enjoy sports, celebrate success and to be the
best we can be. Our players work very hard
to put the best product possible on the court
every night. Let’s be the supporting fans they
know and deserve.
Thank you and GO JAZZ! ◆

The Miller family is bringing back a tradition
started by Larry H. Miller when Winning
Spirit Magazine went into publication in
1986. For Larry, the magazine was a way to
communicate his thoughts and ideas with an
ever-growing company. While he missed the
“early days” of the business when he could
interact one-on-one with his employees, he
recognized that as the company grew, the
mission of the LHM Group reached more
people and communities. Today, the spirit and
fellowship behind this unique family business
are stronger than ever. Gail and the Miller
family will use messages in Winning Spirit
magazine to celebrate the people, vision, and
values that have made the Larry H. Miller
Group of Companies what it is today.
