TIMELY TIPS FOR YOUR TOES
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH CARE HEALTH TIP
The weather is warming and feet are emerging from their winter coverings of boots and shoes . Since people are spending more time in sandals and flip flops , many will head to the salon to get a pedicure . While most will leave with just a fresh coat of polish , some will get more than they bargained for . “ Infections after manicures and pedicures , including bacterial infections and athlete ’ s foot , can occur if certain precautions are not taken ,” says Erika Summers , M . D ., a University of Utah Health Care dermatologist . Here are some tips to protect your piggies :
GO EARLY - Schedule your pedicure first thing in the morning when the soaking tubs and tools are usually the cleanest .
STRAIGHT , NOT CURVED - When it comes to choosing the shape of your nail ask the technician to cut straight across and not round the edges . This will help you avoid ingrown toenails .
KEEP THE WATER CLEAN AND STILL - Make sure you have seen the technician clean the soaking tub before placing your feet into it . Ask to not turn on the whirlpool as that can stir up bacteria .
SKIP THE RAZOR - If your technician offers to shave off dead skin and callouses , ask instead for an exfoliating foot scrub .
GO HAIRY Do not shave or wax for 24 hours before getting a pedicure . Hair removal can cause tiny abrasions that allow bacteria to enter and cause infection .
In the days following a pedicure , check your feet carefully . If you notice redness , itching , or pain , see a dermatologist right away . You don ’ t want a single pedicure to put your feet out of commission during the best barefoot months of the year .
