The Women’s Bean Project in Colorado
O
n January 19, representatives from Larry H.
Miller Dealerships in Colorado presented
a check for $10,000 to the Women’s Bean
Project (WBP), an organization that works to
improve women’s lives by offering a transitional
job to chronically unemployed, low-income
women in Metro Denver.
The program is designed to provide
immediate income, remove employment
barriers, and teach fundamental job-readiness
and life skills to help graduates secure entry-
level jobs and move toward self-sufficiency.
Two-thirds of each woman’s paid time is
spent in structured job-readiness training in
on-site businesses owned and managed by WBP.
These include the production of gourmet bean
soups, chilis, cookie and brownie mixes, bread
mixes, salsa and spice rubs, marinades, dip
mixes, instant teas, Organic Fair Trade coffees,
and sweets. Handmade limited-edition jewelry
items and gift baskets are also produced. All
products are handcrafted and prepared with
attention to detail. Sixty percent of the revenue
generated by the Women’s Bean Project comes
from product sales.
The funds donated by Larry H. Miller
Charities will be utilized to support life
skills educational programming, specifically
Community Education Outreach (CEO). This
program will provide ongoing classes in math
and literacy. ◆
