LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
Award-winning Salt Lake Tribune columnist and sportstalk radio host Gordon Monson moderated a conversation
with Gail, Greg, Steve and Bryan Miller. In addition to his
questions, Gordon also asked the Millers questions submitted
by conference attendees. The sometimes humorous and
sometimes serious discussion covered topics ranging from the
musical group U2 to Gail’s plans for the future.
In the style of leading by example, Jay Francis presented
Megaplex Theatres with the Larry H. Miller Charities Award of
Excellence, recognizing the employees’ example of enriching
lives through giving and service (see article on page 9).
Conference attendees also took part in a service project building
bicycles and wagons for It’s All About the Kids Foundation,
a non-profit organization that creates new and innovative
programs to benefit children’s charities and enhance the lives of
less fortunate children and their families in the San Diego area.
Gail Miller introduced the Group’s leadership to the newlyformed board of directors, many of whom attended the
conference. Board members Dennis Haslam, Beryl Raff and
Michael Montelongo, addressed the gathering, offering insights
into the purpose of the board as well as keys to being and

continued the theme by focusing his remarks on the values of
Integrity and Stewardship and doing business the “right way.”
Kim Casaday (MFRE) and Don Stirling (LHMSE) engaged in a
conversation about the Miller culture and leadership as observed
from an outside perspective. Both used their interactions and
perceptions of company culture before and after joining the
Group. In his closing remarks, CEO Clark Whitworth gave an
overview of the state of the business and his thoughts on what
building bridges to the future means. Gail Miller concluded the
conference with her thoughts on the conference theme as well
as emphasized the
importance of sharing
the lessons learned with
those back home. “We
must continue to stress
the importance of our
Mission, Vision, Values
and Guiding Principles
and instill them within
us by using them every
day,” Gail said.

GUEST SPEAKER: DON YAEGER
HOW LOSING CAN MAKE GREAT WINNERS
Don Yaeger, award-winning keynote speaker, business leadership coach, eight-time New York
Times Best-selling author and longtime associate editor for Sports Illustrated was the guest
speaker at this year’s conference. Don began the meeting by retelling the story of how he beat
one of the greatest professional basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, one-on-one in a
game of basketball. Don went on to describe how, over the course of his career, he had made
a point of asking successful athletes, from Roger Federer to Roger Staubach, what made them
great. In the course of his keynote, Don shared 16 answers he received from those individuals, as
well as the one observation he claimed, is essential for anyone who achieves success: they hate
losing more than they love winning. Don encouraged the group not to make excuses for failures,
but to use those experiences to help them and the teams they lead strive for greatness.
