February 21, 1997 saw the inaugural Leapin’ Leaners and Low Tops fundraising gala at the Delta Center( now Vivint Smart Home Arena). The event was designed to offer the community a chance to mingle with Jazz players and coaches while raising money for charity.
Some of the highlights included the presence of Jazz greats Karl Malone and John Stockton, who signed autographs and took pictures with fans. Guests also took the opportunity to engage in a silent auction and to challenge Jazz players to a free-throw shooting contest, along with other games and activities. Since then, the annual gala event hosted by the Utah Jazz has been enjoyed by many in the community— and appreciated by those who are benefited by the event, such as youth and children in need. ◆
