One of the hardest things about writing a book about English wine was coaxing myself out of my home in Kent . With a few notable exceptions , it felt like I could have written the whole thing without leaving The Garden of England . Faversham , where I live , has dozens of vineyards from tiny family growers to Champagne Taittinger ’ s vast Domaine Evremond project in nearby Chilham , which , rumour has it , will be releasing its first wines this autumn .
Kent has a rich recent history of winemaking . Stephen Skelton produced many of the country ’ s best wines of the 70s and 80s at Spots Farm near Tenterden . The property is now home to Chapel Down , England ’ s largest winemaker . Just down the road ,
