thermawood range completes as 2047 testing
01 02 adapter and the 26 mm silicon glazing block being the only difference .
Fabrication
The Thermawood system is designed to be easily installed into current fabrication processes - the depth of the rebate and the shaped bottom rail are the only variances in machining sashes or doors .
Thermawood recently undertook and passed testing for NZS 4211:2008 and AS 2047 Extra High Wind Zone for a 26 mm thick IGU . The window tested was a 2140 mm x 2140 mm frame into a 56 mm thick timber frame for the new Thermawood drainage system . The test was completed at Facadelab in Auckland under the guidance of John Burgess from BRANZ .
System
This new innovation for Thermawood joins our current tested glazing systems designed for the 44 mm and 56 mm thick frames as a sliding door detail .
Previously , the Thermawood system was restricted to 16 mm IGUs into 34 mm frames and 20 mm IGUs into 44 mm thick frames . The latest test results mean the entire Thermawood range is now compliant and tested to AS 2047 , as required by the National Construction Code .
The new system , as tested , was recessed to sit 1 mm inside the front of the into the
56 mm thick frame , so that the bottom bead did not protrude out the front of the frame like it does in the 44 mm thick frame , giving a cleaner look as present in the current sliding door detail .
Testing
The pressure in the booth is lifted to Extra High Wind Zone for a determined time , before being subjected to the Ultimate Limit State test where the pressure is lifted to 2130 Pa . This pressure is the equivalent of a major weather event ; the likelihood of which is two per cent over a 50 year period .
This extreme test puts the frame , glazing system and IGU under immense pressure . “ I have been in the joinery and glazing industry for nearly 30 years and was surprised at the pressure the frame and IGU could withstand , ” says Graeme Clarke , Director of Thermawood Australia .
The new 56 mm system uses the same beadings , inside rubber and outside rubber as with the 44 mm system , with the drainage
An installation manual outlining all steps involved in glazing the Thermawood system is available for all Thermawood fabricators as required .
Thermawood also specialise in retro-fitting double glazing and draft seals into existing timber frames with franchises available in Melbourne , Sydney and Adelaide .
Thermawood will have a stand at the upcoming AusFenEx16 where all Thermawood glazing systems will be on display , from Retro-fit , 34 mm , 44 mm and 56 mm systems .
Thermawood are an independent New Zealand owned glazing product supplier to the New Zealand and Australian window industry .

Researchers estimate that hundreds of millions of birds are killed each year due to collisions with glass on humanbuilt structures , making bird collisions one of the most significant causes of avian mortality globally .
It is the reflective and transparent characteristics of glass that create the danger for birds , as they cannot see it as a barrier . They fly towards sky and trees reflected by or on the other side of a window or railing and collide fatally with the glass . To prevent these collisions , glass must somehow be made visible to birds .
With the understanding that birds are able to see light in the ultraviolet spectrum , bird-friendly glass innovator , Arnold Glas , developed ORNILUX Bird Protection Glass . The glass has a patterned , UV reflective coating making it visible to birds while remaining virtually transparent to the human eye .
Tested in cooperation with ornithologists in both the USA and Europe , the glass has demonstrated to be an effective solution to mitigate bird collisions , especially in areas where transparency is a top priority .
ORNILUX offers a unique and innovative bird-friendly glazing solution — maintaining the aesthetic transparency of glass while creating visual markers alerting birds to a barrier .
