8 Summer Holidays Follow in Alfred’s footsteps Take a self-guided trail of King Alfred’s Winchester, courtesy of Visit Winchester. Trace the footsteps of King Alfred from his statue in the Broadway to his last known resting place beneath Hyde Abbey Garden. King Alfred will be your constant companion on this tour of Winchester’s historic landmarks. You’ll learn about the earlier history of Winchester and how it has evolved in more recent times. The walk is divided into three loops so you can choose how much to do – ideal if you have younger children or our great British summer weather turns unpredictable. Set off from the famous statue on the Broadway to trace the walls Alfred repaired to keep the Danes at bay and the streets he laid out in the 9th century. The three loops explore the heart of the ancient capital, the upper city and Alfred’s final journey, leading to his resting place. 9 10 www.visitwinchester.co.uk Trace the city’s story The City Museum tells the story of Winchester through three galleries, from its origins as a prehistoric trading centre and Roman regional capital, pre-eminence as a principal city in the Anglo-Norman kingdom, development and decline in the Middle Ages, through to modern times. Features include mosaics and reconstructed 19th and 20th century Victorian High Street shops. There are plenty of hands-on activities for families – sorting artefacts, making a small brass rubbing and colouring in your own AngloSaxon pot design – as well as children’s quizzes and period costumes to try on. You will find Winchester City Museum at The Square, and it is operated and funded by Hampshire Cultural Trust. www.hampshireculturaltrust.org.uk Climb the Cathedral Tower Climb the 213 steps to the top of the tower and experience magnificent views across Winchester and the county. You will see the ringing chamber, the great Cathedral bells and walk the full length of the nave roof with its huge wood beams. It takes 1.5 hours and costs £6. Check out days and times on the website; the minimum age for this activity is 12 years and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Although there is no set upper age limit, it may be unsuitable for those the elderly or those suffering from a medical condition which could be affected by the climb. If you are making a special visit, please do book a tower tour by calling 01962 857 275. www.residentmagazine.co.uk 10 Things Resident Aug Sept.indd 15 PHOTO: © Harvey Mills Photography www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk Resident 15 15/07/2016 12:04
