AFFORDABLE HOUSING
WIN has been organizing on the critical issue
of affordable housing in the District since its
founding in the mid-1990’s.
The Beacon Center - Under Construction!
WIN has taken an active role in encouraging
congregations to build affordable housing on
their underutilized land. In Brightwood Ward
4 leaders have done just that. For over 10
years leaders from Emory United Methodist
Church and Emory Beacon of Light have
been working to build The Beacon Center - a
mixed use project with 60 units of affordable
permanent and transitional family housing, 32
permanent supportive housing for veterans,
and 17 transitional housing units for single men.
There was even a last minute snag requiring
WIN congregations to support the project at the
Historic Preservation Review Board after the
site was declared too historic to alter. Finally on
October 7, 2016 the project broke ground.
John and Jill Ker Conway Residence -
Completed!
Starting in the early 2000’s, WIN organized
for the dedication of the land for permanent
supportive housing, defended the federal
allocation for capital funds, and supported the
NAL land disposition. Securing this land paved
the way for Community Solutions to develop
the project which will provide housing for 60
formerly homeless veterans, as was well as 64
affordable units at 60% AMI. The ribbon cutting
for this building occurred on January 10, 2017.
Homestead Apartments - Renovations in Progress!
UrbanMatters, WIN’s affiliated affordable
housing development company, worked with
residents to complete a TOPA purchase of
the building on behalf of the tenants that will
preserve 55 units of affordable housing right off
Georgia Avenue. In September of 2016
this project broke ground.
