EMT Training

It is Justin Florence’s second year as a health science teacher at PHS, and he has already brought so many positive things to the campus. He went from supervisor at Jewett EMS, medic in Freestone County Fairfield, a First Flight air medic, to Palestine Hospital EMS. He was an EMS in Palestine for 20 years before hurting his back in 2014 and moved to part time status. His mother introduced him to the idea of teaching and has always loved it. When the opportunity arose, he took it and fell in love with it. “It’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I feel like it’s my true calling, even more than being a paramedic.” Last year, he brought several medical vehicles to campus for student tours, including ambulances, firetrucks, and even helicopters. He also introduced a new class this year, “EMT Basics.” Students in this class learn basic lifesaving skills, the importance of team concepts, and working together. It normally only takes about 2 and a half years to become an EMT. Students are also able to earn CPR certification through their course study. Florence had not always planned on being an EMT. He had wanted to be a DJ, but due to his circumstances at the time, he decided that becoming an EMT would be a better fit. In spite of all that, he has owned his own DJ business for 27 years in addition to all of his other accomplishments. Mr. Florence’s advice to future EMTs is to act right, stay focused, and know your material.
