Fair Activities Continue Despite Rain

April showers, bring May flowers! This month has been wet and muddy but it hasn't slowed our 4-H activities! With fair time quickly approaching we weighed-in 23 steers on April 1. Small animal weigh-in will be later in May and I anticipate our numbers will be up this year! Helper Hustlers 4-H Club held a fitting and showing clinic this month, which was attended by 118 youth from across the district. Youth got a t-shirt, a tub of show supplies, and lunch. They traveled from station to station learning about all species of animals! This was a great learning opportunity for young members and new families. We greatly appreciate the Crawford County businesses and agricultural companies across the area that supported this clinic!

This month I also attended two community meetings about the Crawford County Fairgrounds. These meetings consisted of the Fair Board, city personnel, county commissioners, and myself. We are working to divide the tasks of properly taking care of our fairgrounds as we work to better market our fairgrounds for year ‘round activities. Our fairgrounds are a great place for community events. By working to improve the fairgrounds for activities all year, it gives us better facilities for the fair. We are excited about the opportunity for our fair to grow. Last year our barns were at max capacity!

My favorite activity this month was speaking at Coffeyville Community College’s agriculture seminar class. I sat down with students and spoke about my college experiences. Seven years ago, I sat in the same chairs as I stared my college career at Coffeyville. We discussed how to build your resume, how to make contacts, how to get involved on campus, the pros and cons of certain degrees, how I use my degrees in my job, and graduate school. I left students with my business card and a standing offer to help them with cover letters and resumes. In graduate school I taught a business communication class four semesters and like helping people with everything from resumes to business cards and social media strategies.
