culinary arts camp
a fantastic opportunity to partner with greenbush
T
wenty-six budding young chefs filled one of the science labs at Greenbush June 13 and 14, 2017 to participate is the first ever Culinary Arts Camp hosted by Greenbush in partnership with Wildcat Extension District.
Day one included learning kitchen safety skills, chopping veggies, experiencing the smell of yeast as we shaped dough for our crust, and creating individual pizzas which we baked. Students ate their creations as part of their lunch for the day and then we did a debrief exercise about what we liked and what we would probably change if we did it again.
The art of stir-frying was part of our learning experience on the second day. The young chefs prepared raw chicken, chopped more veggies and created our own stir-fry sauce from scratch before heating a skillet and stir-frying it all into the main dish for their lunch that day.
Afternoons were spent learning to work with frosting and decorator tips, working in teams to come imagine a design, and baking sheet cakes. Sheet cakes were then decorated using the selected design, and later presented before a team of judges who selected winners in several categories. Of course, that day ended with everyone enjoying a piece of a creatively decorated cake, and many expressions of thanks for the opportunity to participate in this fun learning experience!
