aughter, discussion, and feelings of accomplishment is what I get to experience twice a week now during our Stay Strong, Stay Health class in Pittsburg. This eight-week program is built on simple, strength-building exercises that will improve balance, health and state of mind.
Building strength promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over 60. For many ages actually, after age 30, you begin to lose as much as three percent to five percent of muscle strength per decade. The importance of activity for all ages has gained momentum. The newest physical activity guidelines just came out in late 2018. The emphasis on any and personalized movement has increased and now there are physical activity recommendations for all ages.
New Aspects of the Guidelines Include:
-Additional health benefits related to brain health, additional cancer sites, and fall-related injuries.
-Immediate and longer term benefits for how people feel, function, and sleep.
- Further benefits among older adults and people with additional chronic conditions.
- Risks of sedentary behavior and their relationship with physical activity.
Physical activity guidance for preschool aged children has been added:
- Elimination of the requirement for activity to occur in bouts of at least 10 minutes.
- Tested strategies that can be used to get the population more active.
Basically, moving more and sitting less can result in better health now and down the road. I look forward to just that with the second half of my Stay Strong Stay Healthy course….along with much laughter and comrade!
Aging with Attitude Sessions Announced
This regional expo has been in the planning phase for several months now. We are excited to announce this year’s Aging with Attitude registration is now open for its event, Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is something for everyone this year. The day begins with a little bit of movement exercise followed by an expert panel discussion on the Opioid Crisis.
Participants will be able to choose from numerous sessions including Garden at Any Age, Scams Against Seniors, Helping Your Family through a Tough Farm Economy, and much more. All this with lunch included, costs only $15.00, if registering by April 15.
