WEAPONS AND GEAR When it comes to calibre , I ’ m a fan of
the . 22-250 and my favorite coyote gun is a TC Venture Predator teamed up with Hornady ’ s V-Max bullets , this being my main coyote killer for the last number of years . Although I like my . 22-250 , many hunters prefer a . 223 , . 222 or even a . 243 caliber to take out with them if they are in an area where there is a possibility to call in a wolf .
I also like taking a 12 gauge shotgun and some 00 shot with me as the close range song dogs can be knocked down in short order with this concoction out to about 40 or 50 yards . Things can happen in a split second and a shotgun can guarantee success when it all unravels right in front of you .
Make sure you have a bipod or shooting sticks to be rock solid for those longer shots . They are a must to capitalize on every one of your opportunities .
Depending on the terrain you are hunting and whether there is snow on the ground will depict what you should be wearing for clothing . The old rule of thumb is if the ground is white , a cheap white cover up jacket will allow you to blend into the landscape , pulling the disappearing act to those keen eyes of the coyotes . You don ’ t need to spend a ton of extra money on clothing , but the key is to be warm , so layer accordingly and bring along gloves and a warm hat , as there is nothing worse than cutting a stand short from being frozen . It never seems to fail that the minute you throw in the towel and stand-up , two coyotes come busting over the ridge catching you completely off-guard .
I don ’ t know if there is anything where I have had more fun out on the trails over the years than calling coyotes . Calling Coyotes seemingly keeps growing in leaps and bounds with more and more picking up this wintertime activity , especially with the increase in the price of furs these past years . It is a great way to keep a sharp edge on your rifle skills , as you ’ ll be shooting many different distances and scenarios , which only helps us become better shooters in the long run .
Believe me , the first time you call in a coyote running at rocket-like speeds towards you , it is a rush that will hook you for life . It is a cheap way to get afield in the off-season months and you will be doing your part to knock some deer killers down , helping to keep our predator numbers low . It ’ s a win / win situation . I hope these tips and tricks will help you get out and take advantage of every opportunity to become a more successful predator hunter !
