CODE CODE CODE REPEAT

The programming and computing club of our campus, CRUX, defines the coding culture in our campus. With only 15 people inducted this year it is safe to say that it is a fairly exclusive club. Samkit Jain is the president of the club while Rohitt Vashishtha is the Secretary. The club brings together all the enthusiastic coders on campus without being branch specific. Inductions are done in two different streams, competitive coding and development.

The club conducts workshops and competitions throughout the year and. This semester workshops were conducted on python, competitive coding and web development giving beginners an insight into coding. Also a PyBITS workshop on flask and scrapy was conducted to encourage people to do open source coding. The major focus this year was to improve the hackathon culture in the campus and two hackathons were conducted one on building web browser extensions in collaboration with the mozilla community and the other was on building chatbots in python. Apart from this regular coding contests were held throughout the semester.

During ATMOS the event ATMOS codejam was the one with the most number of participants. The competitive coding competition of BPHC had around 500 online participants with 12 participants

from other countries taking BPHC to an international level. PyBITS, which is annual student python conference, was also organized by CRUX and had 5 eminent speakers.

In the past two years the ACM ICPC and GSoC selections from the campus has grown showing the amount of growth that the club has seen. This year the club is trying to be more active than earlier, with questions and problems on competitive posted on facebook groups regularly for the members to solve. CRUX is also planning to update the CMS app and make it more user friendly. The club also plans on building a judge for c evaluation and replace the mooshak judge.

With all the effort put by the club, CRUX certainly is turning the campus into a coding hub.

A lot of new societies and clubs have emerged on campus. Student activity has seen a definite boost. But there’s still not a lot of change on the technical front. We need more students on campus engaging in technical activities.

Culturally, we’re definitely growing stronger. The regional associations are performing better. One thing that I find lacking, is our participation in inter-college events. We go out maybe once a year? We need to participate as a contingent, perform well and win big for our campus.

What campus issues do you see that we all as a student community need to work on?

One of the big problems I see in the college is that the confession page should not be a forum for serious issues. If you want to say something, if you think there’s something wrong in college, if you think something can be improved- speak up! People don’t show up at the GBM and then curse the GBM. I think this is very wrong. The GBM is one platform where everyone is allowed and everyone has an opportunity to speak. The confession page should close down according to me. Instead, there should be a public forum for people to voice out their opinion.

Your thoughts on the ’17 batch?

Personally, whatever said and done, I like the ’17 batch more than the ’16 batch. This is a very controversial statement…

Which I won’t write, if you don’t want me to.

No, write everything (laughs). It’s a controversial statement. All ’16 students I’ve worked with in DePP are very nice but overall I think the ’17 batch is better than the ’16 batch. But I might be saying this too early, and I might also be wrong. The only thing is that the ’17 batch hasn’t been interacted with properly, so a lot of them still remain scared. By ATMOS, the fear should have dissipated. They haven’t been able to bond with their seniors.

There is the cut-off issue. I do make jokes on it, but I make them only for the sake of making jokes. It’s not like I really feel that way. Everyone is a BITSian. Now that they’re here they have to sit for the same exams that rest of us have to sit through, so everyone is equal. I think it’s a foolish issue.I see that they’re more obedient. The first years come much faster (to work) than the second years. I like that a lot.

Apart from this, happy holidays! (laughs).
