MID-SEMS AND MADNESS

The semester has finally ended; one cannot deny that it was packed with gruelling excitement! The freshers got a glimpse of the exam fever, after going through an arduous mid-sems. Once the mid-sems were over, a sea of humans left the campus to enjoy a ‘much needed Diwali break’ and the ones who were on campus started doing their bit for ATMOS. The freshers got to experience their first fest which had a wide range of workshops, competitions, amazing pro-shows. A number of guest talks were organised by the BITS Embryo. We got an opportunity to listen to Dilip Chhabria -DC design founder, ISRO chairperson – AS Kiran Kumar and Dr. Abhas Mitra – astrophysicist (expert in black holes). Our campus also hosted the legendary Metro-Man who spoke his heart out and shared his experiences with us, while emphasising the need of having a greater goal for the betterment of our society. The Rahul Subramanian show and The Local Train concert did provide a necessary break from the dystopian atmosphere around us; it was also a way to get our minds off the issue of dogs on campus. While the ‘problem’ has got a permanent solution which will be implemented in a matter of time, the fact that surprised most of the BITSians is that Rahul Subramanian did his homework on the ‘pressing issues’ on campus and give a humorous take on the issues. Time sped as desperate students scrambled around with assignments chanting ‘compre phodenge’ and crammed for three more hours each day thanks to the extended library timings. And all too soon it was time for us to leave, for the very last time for some. For all the others, next sem phodenge!

STRIKER

“Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success”

With that spirit in their minds, the sportsmen of BPHC competed in a plethora of sporting events in and out of the campus in the past few months.

In the Mahindra Ecole Centrale(MEC) football tournament, BPHC football team successfully managed to triumph over the regional giants HITAM by defeating them 1-0 in the opening bout and VNR by 2-0 in the following. They went on to play a tough clash against St. Martins which ended in a stalemate at full time. Nonetheless, the match ended in BPHC’s favour as they managed to sneak out victory through penalties in that and secure a place in the finals. The final game against SNIST proved out to be an arduous one, but the team’s unrivalled determination ensured the victory in the game and ultimately, the tournament.

Their basketball counterparts didn’t fail to amaze us either. In the opening game, the team showcased a glittering performance by defeating MLRIT with the scorecard reading a 32-14 at the end. Riding high on confidence, they next defeated NIFT 56-13 to ensure a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament where they didn’t disappoint us and won the hard-fought game against the MEC by beating them 34-22 to cruise their way to the final. In the finals however, they lost to an excellent VNR team by a close margin of 32-40.

Talking about the sport that runs in our blood: cricket. BPHC won the enthralling first game against the Avanti in the five games BITS vs Avanti DC bilateral series by 6 wickets. In the following match, Avanti managed to turn the tables against us and pulled off an amazing victory by 27 runs. This victory thus levelled the series to one game going to each.

With the “100 days to Arena’18” poster already unveiled, the campus has been abuzz with lots of sporting events lately. Also, initiatives are being taken to introduce games like frisbee and skating, and yoga in order to make them mainstream among the BPHC junta. In conclusion, we can say that the sporting culture of the campus is progressing ahead like never before, and we should all do our best to keep it this way.

ARE YOU UTILIZING THE SU TECH ROOM?

Do you feel thrilled when seeing wires spark, breathe life into robots and create something worth boasting about? And how cool would it be if that happens away from the sweltering heat of the workshop, in the comfort of your bhawan? With exactly this vision, the SU headed out to make us better engineers by creating Tech Rooms.

The SU Tech Room, located in the common rooms of Meera and Shankar Bhawan is a place where students can get a hands-on experience in building innovative and creative projects. It is a tinkering room with basic inventory consisting of Arduino boards, batteries and relay circuits among other things with the inventory being constantly expanded as per new requirements and projects. The room is also fully WiFi enabled, giving you another reason to visit it.

How can the students access these Tech Rooms? Just contact any of the 5 representatives and open the doors to these Tech Rooms. It can be used to complete assignments and projects too. The room is extensively used by the Go-Kart Team and ARC for their automation projects; and by students participating in national level competitions like E-Yantra.

It is a great place to get started with DIY projects and ideas, with all the required materials in place and the expertise of mentors available to guide you through any difficulty you might face. The future plans for the SU Tech Room range from organizing interesting and fun tech activities like Hackathons and Bot-Building; expanding to other Bhawans and adding more inventory so as to increase the participation from students. The SUC expects active participation by the students to utilize its resources to the fullest extent and making our campus a glowing example of technically motivated souls and budding engineers.
