The next day, they went to the Eiffel Tower. It stood tall, towering over the rest of Paris. Its tall iron beams gleamed in the morning sun. “Right now, you’re looking at 9441 tons of iron,” the tour guide told them before rattling off a few more facts. “The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for an international fair,” he said. Izzy listened to the man as he spoke, but had a strange feeling in her gut. Almost as if someone were...watching her. She allowed her attention to stray from the tour guide and skimmed the crowd. Her eyes landed on a man with thick, blonde hair who was staring at her. Alicia noticed her friend was no longer paying attention.“What are you looking at?” she asked. She followed Izzy’s gaze, but didn’t see anything. The man had disappeared in the crowd. “Nothing,” Izzy muttered, turning away. Who was that man, and why was he watching me? she wondered. It’s creepy! She ran to catch up with the group, frightened by the strange man. Soon, they arrived at Notre Dame. “Welcome to Notre Dame,” their tour guide told them. “It’s the pride of Paris.” Izzy and Alicia followed them into the cathedral. The cathedral was huge! There were even priests holding mass in the sides of the cathedral. It was crazy! The tour guide gave them the full tour, but Izzy paused beside the altar. The strange man was following her again! She saw him enter the church. Now, it was really starting to scare her, but when she told the teacher, he didn’t believe her. “Now, Izzy,” he began, “you don’t have to make stuff up. We all know that you have an overactive imagination.” “But I’m not lying!” Izzy tried desperately to tell him, but he would not hear of it. “That’s enough of your lies. If you don’t start behaving soon, I’m going to send you back home!” Izzy turned away angrily. She wasn't lying! Why wouldn’t he believe her? She walked back to Alicia, frustrated. “Why won’t he believe me?” she demanded. Alicia shrugged. “I don’t know.” She ran to rejoin the group, while Izzy stayed where she was. “I’m going to catch that man,” she told herself. She hid behind a statue, and waited for the man to appear. A few seconds later, he walked by her, and she jumped out at him. “Why are you following me?” she demanded to know. The man stared at her, and shook his head. “Izzy, you really are a stupid girl.” He put his hand over her mouth, and dragged her to a black car. Then he shoved her into the trunk, and everything went black. TO BE CONTINUED 14 Whippet Tales 2.0 May 2013
