1 undercurrents
Feb. 7-17
This independent theatre
festival is all about underground
experiments. True to its title,
undercurrents flows below the
mainstream, featuring fearless
shows about varied subjects
like fatherhood and misogyny,
fossil fuels and First Nations
land rights. With nine distinct
theatrical productions, it’s a
steady stream of introspection
and laughs. Puppets portray over
40 characters worried about the
future of their water well in The
Twilight Parade (Feb. 9, 10, 16 &
17) and How to Disappear Com-
pletely (Feb. 14-17) features the
investigation of lighting designer
Itai Erdal into the events that
followed his mother’s request
that he end her life. The festival,
sponsored by Ottawa Fringe,
puts on panels and parties paral-
lel to its plays. Various locations,

Festival
Feb. 8-10
Little brother to the Ottawa Jazz
Fest that takes place in Confed-
eration Park and the NAC every
June, the TD Ottawa Winter
Jazz Festival still captures that
summer heat in the midst of
February. This year’s instalment
that takes over La Nouvelle
Scène showcases Canadian jazz
vocalist Barbra Lica’s upbeat
songs of heartbreak and long-
ing (Feb. 8), woodwind master
Chet Doxas playing his New
York City art inspired “Rich in
Symbols” (Feb. 9), and multiple
Grammy Award-winning master
pianist Fred Hersch (Feb. 10).
The winter music festival also
designates late-night time slots
for open jam sessions, bringing
together musicians from near
and far. La Nouvelle Scène,
