Artist
Spotlight
Terry Lacosse hasn’t put down his
paintbrush since he was two years old. the 65-year-old
Winnipeg artist, known for his scenes of everyday life,
continues to do what he loves.
Inspired by Impressionist painters, Lacosse’s
work is autobiographical. the stories he paints are
scenes that play out in his life, like streetscapes in
his neighbourhood or a day at the beach. It’s this
storytelling he says that resonates with his audience so
much.
In 1992, while working at an art supply store, he
decided to make a life-changing decision and take a
stab at becoming a professional, full-time artist.
For seven years he painted about 200 paintings per
year, honing his skills with each brush stroke. “I’m a
firm believer in repeating tasks, doing it over and over
again to get better,” he says.
his success in marketing his own work led to opening
gallery Lacosse in 2003. While he sold the business
in 2015, his retirement is filled with creating new and
original artwork.
today, Lacosse paints between 25-35 paintings per
year. While the paintings aren’t as numerous as they
were when he began, they are now larger and more
detailed. Even though he’s been painting professionally
for 26 years, he’s learning something new each day he
puts paint to canvas. “It surprises me,” he says.
