signature smoked potatoes with poached
egg and frisee or the rich-tasting honey and
sherry-glazed pork belly. Enjoying a meal
on the patio in this lush urban green space
is akin to having a chef-driven picnic in the
park (page 48).
RIVER CAFÉ
One of the country’s most iconic
restaurants, River Café is located in the
heart of Prince’s Island Park. Its cabin-esque
atmosphere and the sustainable and hyper-
local culinary mantra lends itself perfectly
to outdoor summer dining. Chef Matthias
Fong’s menu is constantly being refreshed,
so check with the restaurant before dining
for the most up-to-date offerings, but having
a platter of west coast oysters and some
champagne on the south-facing patio is a
wonderfully-refined starter you can plan on
indulging in (page 48).

like soy-marinated short rib sandwiches,

OXBOW
Located inside Calgary’s only Relais &
Châteaux property, Kensington Riverside
Inn, Oxbow is one of the city’s newest
restaurants. With a regional Albertan
focus, chef Sean Cutler’s creations aim to
showcase beautiful Canadian ingredients. A
glass of their custom-brewed Kolsch beer
and a plate of white bean hummus accented
with pickled carrots, eggplant, and sprouted
lentils is a perfect fit for a summer’s eve.
Bigger appetites will appreciate the seared
lamb sirloin that’s served with fresh local
asparagus and robust romesco sauce.
Dining on this Inn’s revamped patio offers
plenty of comfortable seating and heat
lam ps to add some warmth if you stay later
into the night (page 48).
PROVISION
Though Central Memorial Park is beautiful
in the fall and winter, there is nothing quite
like being outside at Provision and sipping
on a glass of rosé while enjoying interesting
plates of food by chef Daniel Pizarro. Try the
This open-air space is an extension of the
Argentinian-inspired restaurant Charbar,
and serves up bowls of citrus-y ceviche
brimming with pieces of sustainable
seafood, grilled meats, and plenty more.
Being the only public rooftop space in
the East Village neighbourhood, this
outdoor concept offers a view of Calgary’s
downtown, the Bow River, and north of the
river like no other. Reservations are highly
recommended because this is one busy
rooftop (page 48).
ROUGE
There are few patios in Calgary that feel
as elegant as Rouge’s backyard. Known for
their large-scale garden operation, the most
fun part about dining here in the summer is
watching kitchen staff pop in-and-out of the
back door of the restaurant to pluck fresh
herbs and summer vegetables like patty pan
squashes fresh from the ground and onto
your plate. Look to the back of the yard and
you’ll see their beehives managed by local
beekeepers, ABC Bees (page 48).
