P
atio season is upon
us and that is a
wonderful thing. No
matter what neighbourhood
you find yourself in, chances are
there’s a neighbourhood pub,
café, or restaurant with a sunny
seat waiting for you. Here are
ten places where you can find
elevated food and service and
plenty of sunshine. Al fresco fine
dining, if you will.
ALFORNO BAKERY
Don’t let the casual counter service fool
you, Alforno’s Italian menu is notably
thoughtful and perfect for summer dining.
Their covered patio is street-facing,
but it is mere steps away from Prince’s
Island Park. Share a classic and delicious
margherita pizza, a couple glasses of wine,
and a flaky, butter apple hand pie before
strolling along the Bow River as the sun
sets (page 47).
ALLOY
Known for its eclectic menu that draws
inspiration from around the world, chef
Rogelio Herrera’s food at Alloy tastes all the
more vibrant sitting outside on a beautiful
summer day. Planters around the patio
are full of fresh herbs and greens that are
used in an assortment of bright, summery
cocktails and garnishes on dishes like grilled
prawns and candied tomatoes. Make sure
to bring your sunglasses because this patio
gets plenty of sun (page 51).
Travelling with kids in tow, but still want
a quality outdoor dining experience? Cibo
is definitely where you want to be. It has
a huge menu that spans from delicious
bowls of roasted eggplant dip for sharing
to plates of house-made pasta, and even a
children's menu for the little ones. The patio

MAY/JUNE 2017
Anyone who’s visited Texas or Tennessee
and enjoyed authentic barbecue in full
sun and high temperatures will feel right
at home at this Kensington hotspot. This
whiskey bar and smokehouse is a fantastic
example of a fun, personable dining
experience and gets especially lively on
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Head
to the patio, order a barbecue platter (the
smoked turkey is phenomenal), a whisky
sour, and let the good times roll (page 43)!
KI MODERN JAPANESE
If you are craving some vitamin D and sushi,
sake, and all things tempura, look no further
than Ki. Located on 4th Avenue, right beside
the Westin, it’s an especially ideal place to
have a professional business lunch in the
sun and perfect for happy hour once the
workday is over. This restaurant has one
of the largest sake menus in the country
and also offers a range of heartier dishes
