ON LANGUAGE:
Cambridge vs
Ecce Romani
WORDS BY
Connor Davis
There are many ways to learn
Latin, two such ways are Ecce
Romani and Cambridge Latin.
Ecce Romani and the Cambridge
Latin series are very similar, but
have a few minor differences.
Both Ecce Romani and
Cambridge teach latin through a
story. Each chapter is followed by
a few questions about the
passage to check for
comprehension. In addition both
take a rounded approach,
teaching grammar, culture, and
all parts of speech. As opposed to
the approach taken by Memoria
Press, where verbs are covered
then nouns followed by
prepositions, all without seeing
example sentences or culture.
THE TORCH | 4
In Ecce Romani the is one short
story per chapter followed by
grammar and vocabulary. Every
three or four chapters the is a
discussion about culture. In
Cambridge Latin, there are a few
stories per chapter, followed by a
grammar section, with example
sentences, and a culture
discussion.
Because Ecce Romani has less
content per chapter, it progresses
much quicker than Cambridge
Latin. As a result it can be more
difficult to keep up with Ecce
Romani. Overall Ecce Romani has
a much faster pace and less
emphasis on roman culture than
its Cambridge counterpart.
