Course Name: Health & Personal Fitness Type of Course: Elective Courses Available to: 9th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: Health- Students in high school demonstrate comprehensive health knowledge and skills. Their behaviors reflect a conceptual understanding of the issues associated with maintaining good personal health. They serve the community through the practice of health-enhancing behaviors that promote wellness throughout life. Personal Fitness- Introduces instruction in methods to attain a healthy level of physical fitness; implements a lifetime fitness program based on a personal fitness assessment and stresses strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition, and cardiovascular endurance; includes instruction in fitness principles, nutrition, fad diets, weight control, stress management, adherence strategies, and consumer information; and promotes self-awareness and responsibility for fitness. These courses alternate each day for only one semester, and students will earn a 0.5 credit for both courses. Note: 3 units of Air Force JROTC will waive the Health & Personal Fitness graduation requirements.
Course Name: General Physical Education I- IV Type of Course: Elective Courses
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: These courses focus on any combination or variety of team sports, lifetime sports, track and field events, aquatics / water sports, outdoor education experiences, rhythmic / dance, recreational games, gymnastics, and selfdefense; and provides basic methods to attain a healthy and active lifestyle.
Course Name: Principles of Athletic Training / Sports Medicine Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course introduces techniques to prevent, recognize, evaluate, manage, treat, and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
Course Name: Body Sculpting Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 9th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course provides methods to redefine body shape through specific exercises. Based on the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fitness and conditioning programs, this course covers weight training, conditioning exercises, and proper nutrition to improve muscle tone, muscle definition, posture, bodily proportions, and overall condition of the body and energy levels.
Course Name: Weight Training Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Body Sculpting and HS coach recommendation
Description: This course introduces weight training; emphasizes strength development training and proper lifting techniques; includes fitness concepts for developing healthy lifetime habits based on the American College of Sport Medicine Guidelines for fitness and conditioning. Due to the limited space in weight training, 9th grade students may not elect to take this class unless they are participating in a high school sport / coach recommended.
