Course Name: Patient Care Technician Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 12th grade
Prerequisites: Patient Care Fundamentals( 74 %+)
Description: This course goes beyond the Therapeutic Services – Patient Care Pathway as a fourth additional course. This course introduces students to the role and responsibility of the Patient Care Technician. The course begins with a review of Nurse Aide Skills and expands to include blood drawing techniques, EKG measurement, basic wound care, basic respiratory care, colostomy care, and bladder catheter insertion.
Course Name: Essentials of Biotechnology Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Introduction to Healthcare Science( 80 %+) AND Honors Biology( 74 %+)
Description: This is the second course in the Biotechnology Research and Development Pathway. This course introduces students to the broad understanding of the fundamentals of biotechnology and the impact on society. The knowledge and skills in this course provide a basic overview of current trends and careers in biotechnology, with an emphasis on basic laboratory skills, along with the business, regulatory, and ethical aspects of biotechnology.
Course Name: Applications of Biotechnology Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Essentials of Biotechnology( 80 %+)
Description: This is the third course in the Biotechnology Research and Development Pathway. This course further introduces students to the fundamentals of biotechnology. Included in this course are additional applications and techniques in biotechnology that expand and increase the student’ s comprehension of how biotechnology utilizes living systems to create products and enhance lives. In addition, laboratory applications learned in this course form the pivotal component distinguishing science theory from application in bioscience, like that of engineering and mathematics. Bioscience and the application of laboratory techniques to the manipulation of living systems is a cornerstone of pharmaceutical, medical device, forensic science, environmental science, agriculture, alternative fuel, and green chemistry. Students who successfully complete this should be prepared to take an End of Pathway Assessment( EOPA) to be able to earn an industry-recognized credential.
