Course Name: Dual Enrollment( DE) NAST 2100- Patient Care Fundamentals Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 11th and 12th grade

Description: This is the co-third course in the Therapeutic Services – Patient Care Pathway. This course introduces students to the role and responsibilities of the Nurse Aide. An emphasis is placed on understanding and developing critical thinking skills, as well as demonstrating knowledge of the location and function of human body systems and common disease processes; responding to and reporting changes in a residents / patient’ s condition, nutrition, vital signs; nutrition and diet therapy; disease processes; vital signs; observing, reporting and documenting changes in a residents condition; emergency concerns; ethics and legal issues and governmental agencies that influence the care of the elderly in long term care settings; mental health and psychosocial well-being of the elderly; use and care of mechanical devices and equipment; communication and interpersonal skills and skills competency based on federal guidelines. Specific topics include: roles and responsibilities of the Nurse Aide; communication and interpersonal skills; topography, structure, and function of the body systems; injury, and rehabilitation and restorative care. This course is designed to provide students interested in the careers that involve patient care with entry level skills most commonly associated with the Nursing Assistant career. The students are required to meet both national and intrastate professional guidelines as designated by applicable regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Health and Safety Administration( OSHA), Center for Disease Control( CDC), and the Department of Health and Human Services( HHS) with a specific focus on the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987( OBRA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996( HIPAA). Upon completion of this course and its prerequisites, this course meets the Certified Nurse Assistant curriculum content as specified by the Georgia Medical Care Foundation. Students meeting all academic, attendance, and age requirements may sit for the Georgia Registry’ s Examination. Successful completion of the Georgia Registry Examination allows students to seek employment in the state of Georgia as a Certified Nurse Assistant. This is a Dual Enrollment class through Chattahoochee Technical College( NAST 2100: Nurse Aid Accelerated) that is taught on Wheeler ' s campus.

Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Complete Wheeler ' s Dual Enrollment application steps AND Chattahoochee Tech ' s DE application steps( see page 10 for more Dual Enrollment information)
Description: This is the co-third course in the Therapeutic Services – Patient Care Pathway. This course must be taken if the DE Nurse Assistant Accelerated course was taken by Spring of Senior year. This course can be taken a semester before, concurrently with, or a semester after the DE Nurse Fundamentals course. This is a Dual Enrollment class through Chattahoochee Technical College that is taught fully online through Chattahoochee Technical College.
