Course Name: Essentials of Healthcare Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Introduction to Healthcare Science( 70 %+)
Description: This is the second course in the Therapeutic Services and Medical Office Pathways. Anatomy and Physiology is a vital part of most healthcare post-secondary education programs, and this course is a medicalfocused anatomy course addressing the physiology of each body system, along with the investigation of common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases. The prevention of disease and the diagnosis and treatment that might be utilized are addressed, along with medical terminology related to each system. This course provides an opportunity to demonstrate technical skills that enforce the goal of helping students make connections between medical procedures and the pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. Students will also earn an embedded Anatomy credit on their transcript; students will receive the same final grade for both courses unless an Anatomy credit was already previously earned.
Course Name: Honors Essentials of Healthcare Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Introduction to Healthcare Science( 80 %+)
Description: This is the second course in the Therapeutic Services and Medical Office Pathways. This course is an accelerated version of Essentials of Healthcare and delves deeper into each body system. Students will also earn an embedded Honors Anatomy credit on their transcript; students will receive the same final grade for both courses unless an Anatomy credit was already previously earned.
Course Name: Health Information Management / Medical Office Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Essentials of Healthcare OR H. Essentials of Healthcare( 70 %+)
Description: This is the third course in the Health Informatics / Health Information Management / Medical Office Pathway. This course will orient the student to health information management and working in a medical office. Topics include introducing students to skills and knowledge utilized in a medical office, the structure of healthcare in the United States, healthcare providers, and the structure and function of professional organizations. The course provides students with medical office computer and software skills that include hardware and software components of computers for medical record applications; database software and information management; specialized information management systems in healthcare; methods of controlling confidentiality and patient rights; and accuracy and security of health information data in computer systems. Students who successfully complete this should be prepared to take an End of Pathway Assessment( EOPA) to be able to earn an industry-recognized credential. After completion of this pathway and any additional requirements, students may be able to take a medical office assistant exam from a certifying body.
