Course Name: World History Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade
Prerequisites: Literature and Composition I( 70 %+), H. Literature and Composition( 70 %- 73 %), OR Pre-AP Social Studies( 70 %- 84 %)
Description: This course is designed to be a survey of people and nations of both Western and non-Western civilizations. This course provides students with a comprehensive, intensive study of major events and themes in world history. Students begin with a study of the earliest civilizations worldwide and continue to examine major developments and themes in all regions of the world. Students can clearly see the relationship between cause and effect in historical events, students should have the opportunity to review those fundamental ideas and events from ancient and classical civilizations. The course culminates in a study of change and continuity and globalization at the beginning of the 21st century. A student’ s Literature and Composition I grade will be used for placement if a 9th grade Social Studies is not taken.
Course Name: Honors World History Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade
Prerequisites: H. Literature and Composition I( 74 %- 89 %), Pre-AP Social Studies( 85 %- 89 %) OR AP Human Geography( 70 %- 79 %)
Description: This is an accelerated college prep course that covers all the standards included in the onlevel World History course but explores the concepts at a deeper level with critical thinking, problemsolving skills, and extensive reading and writing used extensively for this level. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course. A student’ s Literature and Composition I grade will be used for placement if a 9th grade Social Studies is not taken.
Course Name: AP World History Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade
Prerequisites: H. Literature and Composition I( 90 %+), Pre-AP Social Studies( 90 %+) OR AP Human Geography( 80 %+)
Description: This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that have shaped the world from c. 1200 CE to the present. Students will analyze texts, visual sources, and other historical evidence and write essays expressing historical arguments. Units of study include The Global Tapestry, Networks of Exchange, Land-Based Empires, Transoceanic Interconnections, Revolutions, Consequences of Industrialization, Global Conflict, Cold War & Decolonization, and Globalization. The course will involve extensive readings, independent study, and frequent written / document analysis to prepare students for the AP World History Exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course. A student’ s Literature and Composition I grade will be used for placement if a 9th grade Social Studies is not taken.
