Course Name: Current Topics in Reading Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 9th grade
Prerequisites: Lexile level below a 1010 and teacher recommendation
Description: This course helps students ' fundamental literacy skills development. This course will focus on building adolescent literacy practices, including the use of individualized interventions as appropriate. This course takes place in a language lab setting, including both drill and practice opportunities as well as applying these skills into the Spring Literature and Composition I course. This course will be taken in the Fall and will replace an elective spot, and Literature and Composition I will be taken in the Spring.
Course Name: Literature and Composition I Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 9th grade
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course develops the integrated skill set that comprises the English Language Arts discipline to ensure that students are on track to be college and work ready and focuses on the interpretation, evaluation, construction, and design of texts across genres and modes in a variety of real-world, academic, and disciplinary contexts while sustaining and building mastery of language applications and disciplinespecific practices.
Course Name: Honors Literature and Composition I Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 9th grade Prerequisites: Language Arts 8( 90 %+) OR Advanced Language Arts 8( 85 %+)
Description: This is an accelerated version of the Literature and Composition I( see above) course that is designed to build students’ capacity in the literacy practices and skills that establish the groundwork for future real-world and academic communications. This course is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement English / Language Arts courses. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Literature and Composition II Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade
Prerequisites: Literature and Composition I( 70 %- 89 %) OR H. Literature and Composition I( 70 %- 73 %)
Description: This course continues to develop the integrated skill set that comprises the English Language Arts discipline to ensure that students are on track to be college and work ready and focuses on the interpretation, evaluation, construction, and design of texts across genres and modes in a variety of real-world, academic, and disciplinary contexts while sustaining and building mastery of language applications and discipline-specific practices. Students will be prepared to take an End-of-Course Exam.
