Course Name : Multicultural Literature Type of Course : Core Course Available to : 12th grade Prerequisites : American Literature ( 70 % - 89 %)
Description : This course focuses on world literature by and about people of diverse ethnic backgrounds . Students explore themes of linguistic and cultural diversity by comparing , contrasting , analyzing , and critiquing writing styles and universal themes . The students write expository , analytical , and response essays . A research component is critical . The students observe and listen critically and respond appropriately to written and oral communication . The students understand and acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading , writing , and speaking .
Course Name : Honors Advanced Composition Type of Course : Core Course
Available to : 12th grade
Prerequisites : American Literature ( 90 %+), H . American Literature ( 80 %+), OR AP English Language ( 70 %+)
Description : This course is an accelerated college-prep class designed to focus on the writing process ( planning , drafting , and revising ). The students will focus on different writing genres and organizational structures : expository , persuasive , narrative , descriptive , comparison-contrast , exemplification , process analysis , classification , cause and effect , and definition . Advanced grammar skills will be a major component of this class and an emphasis on research will be also required . Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course .
Course Name : Dramatic Writing ( Film , Television , and Theatre ) Type of Course : Core Course
Available to : 12th grade
Prerequisites : American Literature ( 90 %+), H . American Literature ( 80 %+), OR AP English Language ( 70 %+)
Description : This course focuses on skills to culminate in creating and developing dramatic writing for theatrical media with special emphasis on film and television . Includes development of “ writerly stance ” by reading , viewing , and analyzing tests and visual media from a writer ’ s point of view , with focus on understanding the construction process and including the application of conventions of standard English grammar and usage . Students will earn an embedded Honors Advanced Composition on their transcript ; students will receive the same final grade for both courses . This course is recognized as a Fine Arts credit . Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for the embedded Honors Advanced Composition course .
