ENGLISH / LANGUAGE ARTS
The English / Language Arts department ' s mission is to develop Wheeler students ' critical thinking , writing , and imagination skills through the study of literature , language , and writing .
Students will be exposed to learning through : Literature : Students will read and analyze a range of literary works , including poetry , prose , and verse , to understand how they contribute to culture . Creative writing : Students will read fiction , poetry , journalism , and creative nonfiction to strengthen imaginative thinking . Interdisciplinary work : Students may take classes that combine English with other disciplines , such as Social Studies and Theatre . Persuasive / argumentative writing : Students will learn the art of using logic , reason , and citing sources to create and support thesis statements .
