What Work Leicestershire
HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
If you’ re looking for a rewarding career with lots of opportunities to progress, then health and social care is for you. It’ s all about providing personal and practical care and support to help people live their lives. With over 350 job roles, you could work with someone with a physical disability, a mental health condition, a learning disability or someone who’ s overcoming challenges in their life, for example through illness. This could be in their own home, the community, a hospital, a care home or from an office. There are also other roles in health based in specialist consultancy or labs but there are also support roles in admin, security and maintenance which are essential to the day-to-day running of the service.

What is happening?
• The sector’ s growing as people are living longer and have more complex needs: 53,300 are employed in this sector locally.
• Health and social care services are working more closely.
• Some recruitment is based on values and behaviours rather than experience and qualifications – showing you’ re the right type of person for the job.
• Digital technologies and apps are having a huge impact including patient monitoring, diagnostics, robotics and bioscience. These are creating new job areas, for example in telecare, where remote monitoring and support can be given to people in their own homes.
• A growing range of apprenticeships, including new integrated apprenticeships where you can get experience of working in both health and social care.
• Skills shortages include midwives, A & E doctors, GPs, care and social workers, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, orthoptists, bioscientists and radiographers.
• The adult social care workforce must grow by 80 % by 2025, and domiciliary care is expanding.
• Leicestershire is home to the Charnwood Campus – the UK’ s first Life Sciences Opportunity Zone – which will develop industry, research institutes and government organisations in Life Sciences. http:// charnwoodcampus. com
