Domestic Bliss

by J.D. Smith

If my smile was a valley

It would’ve been endless

At least that is what I used to think.

I don’t need the vastness

Anymore than I need your praise.

If my heart was a racehorse,

It would’ve won by a landslide.

That was before my eyes met yours

Every day of every week.

Now its pace is constant.

If my feet were wheels,

They would’ve traveled the world for you

That’s what they’ve always known

And will always remember

Because they will never lose their momentum.

For it is my job to do the most

For my eternal and my peace.

This is why my feet will never expire.

Their endless rhythm will continue

long after the world has met its end.

So long as my lips still curl,

My heart still thumps,

And my feet march by,

Through the valley of life

And pass the steed of death.

You may refrain from calling me lover,

And instead call me friend.
