Hockey

Report

We pride ourselves with our world class facilities and thrive on the fact that all our hockey players are able to play on astro. Our equipment has been upgraded and the focus for 2016 was the importance of body mechanics and improving all of our players’ technical ability. We also increased our coaching staff who added huge value to the hockey at Wynberg.
The league matches were competitive but our Wynberg girls came out tops. The U10As and Bs showed remarkable improvement winning most of their games in the second half of the season. The talent in this age group is promising for our hockey. The U11As and Bs played in a Hockey 5s tournament held at Hartleyvale Stadium and despite the cold weather they had a huge amount of fun. Our U10C and U13D teams played in an 8-a-side festival hosted by St George’ s Grammar School and the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by our girls was incredible.
The U13A and B teams had a jam-packed season starting with the Super 8 Tournament hosted by WBJS, which was won by our U13As. Both the A and B teams participated in the Cannons Creek 5s and our U13As proved once again to be too strong for the opposing schools and came first in this tournament.
The U13s have worked extremely hard this year and their results speak for themselves. They were placed in the Top 4 in the school league, came fifth at the Top Schools Tournament out of 110 schools and came third in the Open A inter-schools tournament with the B team doing exceptionally well and coming second in the B Section.
This has been a transition year for Wynberg and the players and coaches have embraced the challenge. A big thank you to all our coaching staff and the dedicated players. Thank you to our parents for your continued, valued support.
Our aim is to continue with this growth and play the‘ Wynberg Brand’ of hockey in 2017.
