Grade 7 Outings
Franschhoek
This year the Grade 7s went on an outing to the French Huguenot Museum and the chocolate factory in Franschhoek. We travelled there and back by bus and got split into two groups. At the museum we learnt about the first French Protestants to arrive at the Cape and how they lived their daily lives. In the factory we learnt about the production process of chocolate and how cocoa beans turn into the delicious milky treats that we find in the shops. We also got to buy a little chocolate to take home. We enjoyed our tasty packed lunches outside the Huguenot monument.

Slave Lodge
The Grade 7s set off on foot to Kenilworth station destined for the Slave Lodge in Cape Town. There was a clear buzz of excitement as we took our seats on the train, as this was the first time many had used this mode of transport.
After arriving at Cape Town station, we made our way to the top of Adderley Street, where the Iziko Slave Lodge is situated. We marvelled at the formal residential areas of the Dutch and gaped at the poor living conditions of the slaves. We were intrigued to see the gravestones of Jan van Riebeeck and his wife, Maria. This was particularly interesting to us as we had been learning about him in our History classes. This outing has given us a better understanding of how the enslaved lived and how they were treated. We were packed into a room designed like the interior of an old ship, to physically feel the overwhelmingly cramped conditions. Many girls mentioned that the claustrophobic conditions of the ship increased their pity for the enslaved.
To end off the exciting trip, we enjoyed packed lunches in nature in the Company Gardens.
We walked back to the station and returned to school, our heads filled with knowledge and experience.
Misbah Toefy Grade 7A and Clarise Conradie Grade 7A
While walking through the Slave Lodge corridors, we were able to read the actual feelings and thoughts expressed by the enslaved and Dutch alike.
