When You’ re Part of a Team
“ AWESOME” would be the best way to describe 2016, because it has indeed been an awesome year for WGJS in all aspects. Our girls have excelled and exceeded our expectations, proving themselves to be awesome individuals in their own right and making us proud to be the awesome school that we are.
It’ s fitting then, that the theme for Term 4 would be“ AWESOME”, with the message being“ It’ s awesome to be me, and it’ s awesome to be here”. We wanted to inspire our girls to embrace their individuality and to be in awe of all that is unique about themselves. But we also strived to help them find true wonderment in the world around them and to recognise their ability to make their mark. They were taught that they are part of a family, a school, a community and they were encouraged to embody the philosophy“ I am because we are …”. In doing so, we hoped to get them to truly appreciate the fact that they are“ here” – here to be heard, here to make a difference, here to live, laugh and love.
Imparting this knowledge involved re-visiting the three themes explored earlier in the year. Metallics was the colour theme for this term. The girls collected metallic flower stickers for their charts, in hope of earning a medal at the end of the term. Activities included our own“ WGJS Walk a Mile in Each Other’ s Shoes” challenge and a clothing drive that assisted our local children’ s homes and homeless shelters. We further explored anti-bullying and friendships, with talks and workshops geared towards increasing self-acceptance and social tolerance.
Break-time friendship-swaps and lunch-shares, combined with interactive classroom challenges, ensured that the girls were continuously exposed to all four themes and were well-equipped with all the values required for them to realise their true potential to be absolutely AWESOME!
